Part-time weekend day training: 8 days. (6th April 2008, 8th June 2008, 6th July 2008 plus five more days in Autumn 2008, please contact the office)

About the Course

In this course, students will be trained to observe children’s behaviour, to be able to assess their underlying needs and to have a wealth of practical strategies to meet or address those needs. Hence the course is central for making The Common Assessment Framework work and also for meeting the requirements of Every Child Matters.

Children’s behaviour reflects their current understanding and skills in managing their emotions. When they have not been supported well enough to communicate and think about their emotions, they often discharge them through difficult or challenging behaviour, neurosis and/or bodily symptoms. When adults are trained to see children’s behaviour as a communication of specific underlying emotional needs, they are far better placed to identify what to do to help the child to behave differently. This in turn supports the child to access learning, develop emotional resilience and better social skills.
