A child’s primary language for feelings is not one of everyday language; however, enter the realm of image and metaphor, and given the right art media, they often speak profoundly and with ease. Through the use of case studies, supporting theory and experiential exercises participants will learn how to use painting, drawing and other art forms to support children to speak about their feelings in safe and contained ways. Participants will gain practical tools and techniques suitable for one-to-one work, groups and the whole class.
Sophia is a Dramatherapist and an Integrative Arts Psychotherapist. She has worked in a variety of clinical settings spending many years working in psychiatry in the NHS. She currently works at Family Futures, which is an adoption support agency, with children who are adopted and their families. Sophia has been a trainer on various training courses including the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education in several capacities. She has a particular interest in the therapeutic application of story in therapy including traditional tales and personal narrative.
