Eminent presenters, all experts in the field of transformational organisational change, will speak about how to make that vital paradigm shift to mental health for all, using their own moving examples as illustration. We have presenters from schools, social enterprises and youth offending institutions. The conference will empower delegates with key knowledge, tools and interventions to ensure that their school, community, family group or organisation is a mentally healthy place for all. We now have all the research we need evidencing what makes a culture mentally well or mentally unwell.
In mentally well cultures, people develop both personally and professionally; they feel valued, understood and psychologically safe. They laugh, are creative and make good things happen. In mentally unwell cultures, people get mentally and physically ill (stress related sick leave). These cultures are often fear-based cultures with 'power over' leaders and lack of laughter, play and creativity, as neuroscientific research shows that fear blocks the pro-social systems in the brain. When you spend just an hour in a mentally well and mentally unwell culture, the atmosphere in both is tangible. In the current climate, increasinlgy schools are faced with pupil mental health problems and teachers who feel stressed, isolated and undervalued. Therefore it’s vital schools, organisations and communities have this knowledge to ensure their culture makes the shift to be a place of healing for all. The same fundamental principles apply to couple and family cultures.
Sue is Director of Inclusion at Aspire Academy Trust. In addition, she also has strategic responsibility for Connor Downs Academy and St Uny C of E Academy. Sue is a qualified advanced skills teacher and has been teaching since 1990. With an MA in Education, an MSc in Leadership and Organisational Change, the Professional Qualification for School Inspection (PQSI) and the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH), Sue has particular expertise in raising standards and achievement, English and Special Educational Needs.
Dr Coral Harper
Former Deputy Head Teacher for 10 years of a local authority special school in Bristol and over a year as acting Headteacher. Former Head of Foundation at Mulberry Bush Organisation; a psychotherapeutic institution for very traumatised children. Coral has had 24 years’ experience as a qualified teacher and then Senior Lead in supporting children and young people within the mainstream and those with social, emotional and mental health difficulties and/or challenging behaviour. She is a qualified Nurture group teacher (Professional Certificates in Educational Therapy and in Understanding and Managing Children with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties), Outdoor Learning Consultant and Level 3 trained Forest School leader; experienced in supporting the strategic and philosophical development and practice of outdoor learning. Coral is an experienced Trainer and Consultant in the theory and potential of Outdoor learning and Animal Assisted Interventions for Learning. She is an independent freelance consultant supporting teachers and other education professionals with individuals and groups of challenging and/or vulnerable children. She has extensive experience in training, coaching, mentoring and supervision. Coral is an experienced researcher, speaker, presenter and Principal Educator in Trauma Informed Practice. She is owner of a registered ‘Pets as Therapy’ dog who regularly accompanies her with work.
While studying for a teaching degree at the University of Córdoba, David set up his own company which was dedicated to the provision of health and safety services to different communities. David joined Diagrama on leaving university and spent his first five years as a Social Educator in a secure establishment for the Diagrama Foundation in Spain, also achieving his Social Educator Degree during that time. In 2006 he lead an after-care programme which helped over 400 children and young people who had been through the justice system. He established links with all the relevant community agencies and organisations which support the young people to reintegrate into society. In 2008 he moved from Spain to the UK with his family to establish the Foundation in the UK and was appointed Chief Executive in 2009. David is member of the European Society of Criminology (ESC) and the European Prison Education Association (EPEA).
Nicky Murray is the Headteacher of Burnside Primary, located in Carnoustie, Scotland. The school team has developed a way of working that prioritises learning and wellbeing across the school community. The approaches are research-informed and evidence-based and draw on a variety of influences including; relationships, neuroscience, nurture, attachment and resilience. The school has been awarded the National award this year for Health and Wellbeing and HMI Inspection has evaluated the work of the school as sector leading in leadership and health, wellbeing, inclusion and equality. Nicky has participated in international panels and national conferences sharing the work of the school which continues to influence many contexts across the UK. Nicky will describe the origins, processes and practice at his school in learning and wellbeing.
