About the day

This day focuses on ways of helping children and teenagers with the acute pain that can ensue after traumatic loss and/or unwanted, sudden or unexpected change. The conference presenters will focus on a range of painful losses and transitions: separation/divorce, death of a loved one from natural causes, accident or suicide, living with parental illness, traumatic and sudden separations, losing your country (refugees), moving house, school, losing everything familiar. The far-reaching consequences of un-mourned loss is often under-estimated. Neuroscientists have now found a clear link between un-mourned loss and depression. So both presenters will address how to help children and teenagers who are suffering from traumatic loss, to address un-helpful coping mechanisms and find better ways of making sense of what has happened. Most importantly, presenters will discuss how to help children and teenagers mourn and how to support them to feel safe enough to want to talk about and ‘work through’ their loss in ways that enable them to reflect, feel and function in healthier ways.

Illustrated with fascinating and moving case material and film footage, practical interventions will be discussed from a knowledge base of what happens to the brain and the body when undergoing traumatic loss.

What you'll learn on this day

  • Learn to recognise common disturbed behaviour manifestations resulting from unprocessed traumatic loss
  • Learn how to enable children/teenagers to mourn
  • Know how to respond when children and teenagers have cut off from the pain of too much loss or too painful a loss
  • Understand why so many children and teenagers who are not helped to mourn move from traumatic loss to violence
  • Understand how to prepare children and young people for important life transitions and difficult life events
  • Take away effective interventions for dealing with a child’s/teenager’s loss and grief, so that unbearable feelings become thinkable thoughts.

This day will also include the following:

  • Child bereavement theory
  • Memory making - continuing bonds
  • Contracting with bereaved children
  • Age appropriate understanding of death
  • Needs of bereaved children/young people
  • Sample classroom session
  • Sibling bereavement
  • Complex/traumatic death
