About the conference

"Relationships go wrong all by themselves" (Professor Leslie Greenberg)

This conference will address the fact that so many good relationships break down simply through lack of resources on how to handle conflict well. Unless a person has been spectacularly lucky in having parents as great models for handling conflict, it is unlikely they will have the skills for successful conflict resolution that actually strengthens key relationships over time. And research shows that conflict avoidance is very damaging for relationships too.

Presenters will address how, when feeling threatened and hurt, unappreciated people tend to move into very primitive mechanisms: flight/flight/freeze which results in the other person moving into fight/ flight/freeze. This drives the two people apart, both reeling from feelings of shame, pain, and feeling desperately misunderstood. With some beautiful reflective work, the presenters will demonstrate how it is possible to support families, couples, parents and children to work well with conflict, to feel empowered and learn to surf conflict in an elegant way instead of living in dread of drowning in shame, contempt and attachment rupture. All the presenters are specialists in family therapy, couples counselling, conflict resolution and parent child relationships.

What you'll learn from attending?

  • Learn about the modes of transacting that damage relationships
  • Learn about the role of defences and negative interlocking triggers in causing pain in relationships
  • Learn to recognize when one party wants to punish not resolve due to "hating their partner for the original failures of their parent” (Winnicott)
  • Learn how to help parents and children, families and couples to resolve conflict well
  • Learn the skills for supporting people to be vulnerable in relationships, to voice their hurt and to know it will heard well
  • Learn how to help the different parties find the words that heal not hurt
  • Listen to moving case material where serious attachment rupture was healed with the help of a skilled facilitator
  • Take away skills for your own life on how to nurture a relationship and transact non-violently
