Margot Sunderland will provide a wealth of vital tools, techniques and knowledge (from neuroscience and psychology) for professionals to help teenagers to live life well, to ‘suffer well’ and rise again if they hit rock bottom. The training is intended to empower teenagers to be able to make informed decisions, instead of living their lives blighted by painful unresolved emotions, living dangerously, failed relationships and body harming.
Whilst current PSHE mental health programmes (Personal, Social and Health Education) for teenagers address such issues as sexual consent, safety around use of social media, and self-image, the intense emotions that smash teenagers and adults against the rocks so to speak, and drive them to hurt each other or themselves, often remain unaddressed. PSHE often teaches teenagers how to just ‘manage their feelings’; for most people, this simply doesn’t work. If for example, you try to ‘manage’ your panic attacks you will still have panic attacks. If you are given a PSHE worksheet to boost your self-esteem, when deep down you ‘know’ you are scum, you will still think you are scum. The neurochemical and physiological forces of anxiety, depression, shame, social defeat, rejection, self-loathing etc. are just too strong. If any other school subject, e.g. chemistry or maths, failed to use a sound up-to-date knowledge-base there would rightly be an outcry. In contrast, Dr Sunderland will draw on 30 years of peer-reviewed psychological and neuroscience studies about the human condition, applied to the highs and lows of the life of the teenager, so we can have far more hope of empowering vulnerable teenagers to use life well and for society to become healthier for all.
