Catherine’s session will focus on practical communication skills that can be used with young children experiencing domestic abuse and coercive control and will include key information on:

  • The roles children may play in their family and how this can impact attachment and communication with mothers.
  • Talking with and listening to children.
  • Examples of therapeutic exercises including how to use her published work.
  • She will also share some of her childhood experiences.

Catherine Lawler

Catherine has over 30 years’ experience of directly supporting children and families experiencing domestic abuse and coercive control in the UK. She has worked as a qualified specialist domestic abuse children’s counsellor helping children and young people identify and work through their trauma experiences. She is a certified Trauma Practitioner and has previously worked for Children Social Care for 20 years as a practitioner and manager, supervising staff/caseloads and managing overall services. She currently works as a Safeguarding Training Consultant.

Catherine is a childhood survivor of domestic abuse and coercive control. Her mother’s second marriage was one filled with abuse and trauma for over 40 years. Unfortunately, her mother died within this context.

She is a published author of three books on domestic abuse and coercive control, one for professionals “Domestic violence and children, a handbook for schools and early years settings” and two for children, ”Floss and the boss” and ”Luna little legs”. The story books have accompanying professional guides to enable adults supporting children to use them in a trauma informed and confident manner. She is currently writing her third children’s book.

Catherine develops a variety of training for organisations, focusing on, domestic abuse and coercive control, abuse within young people’s intimate relationships, the risks to children accessing pornography and more recently the Carole Check, a training package in memory of her mother.
