Trauma Informed Approaches to Behaviour Support

Trauma Informed Approaches to Behaviour Support

About the event

Children’s experiences over the last two years of the pandemic have increased anxiety levels and their mental health has suffered. This often shows up in their behaviour. Traditional behaviourist approaches can exacerbate the situation resulting in escalation, leaving children already disadvantaged by their experiences, further hindered and frequently punished for their responses.

This session will support delegates to understand the impact of punitive, shame-based system of behaviour management, and how to move to a more relational, trauma informed approach, without a decline in expectations and standards. The session will highlight the key components of a successful behaviour support response, and delegates will have a clear idea of the elements of a successful behaviour support system including structures and routines, ideas for the development of consistent language and reflective conversations and an exemplar policy for behaviour and relationships.

 Topics covered:

  • Understanding the impact of shame-based, punitive behaviour management and isolation - the neuroscience of shame and toxic stress and the impact of relational approaches in reducing problematic behaviour
  • The common pitfalls in moving from zero tolerance/behaviourist approaches - taking staff (and parents) with you

  • The principles of a trauma informed approach - from management to support - key principles for change, whole community cultural shift
