Experts will explore causes of depression and anxiety in children and young people as opposed to simply being able to recognise symptoms and ‘refer on’. Many child professionals feel de-skilled when faced with what appears to be ongoing relentless anxiety states and/or futility in children and young people. Many of whom who have lost all hope in a better life. Yet being able to sit with a child in despair or in catastrophic phantasising is vital. So this day will focus on how to be and what to say, showing that empathic listening, understanding, coupled with emotional regulation all in the context of relationship with a trusted adult can do so much.
The conference includes moving audio-visual input demonstrating narrative competence (being able to respond effectively to the child’s story) resulting in the child moving into health. We know that it’s not pills and diagnosis that supports children to value life again and/or to know deep states of calm often for the first time, but time with an emotionally-available adult who knows what to say and is able to think and respond when faced with the most painful intense dysregulated states in children and young people.
So this day will enable delegates to understand the how, the why and the what to do.

Integrative Child Psychotherapist who trained at the Institute of Arts and Therapy in Education. She currently works with children, adolescents and their families at The Blue Door Practice, London. Jane has significant experience working in schools and education settings, where she has developed therapeutic services and schoolwide programmes to support the mental health and wellbeing of students and staff. Jane has a particular interest in how schools can support the emotional and mental health of students with specific mental health needs, as well as the wider school community. She was delighted when the therapeutic team she was a part of at Highgate Primary School were awarded a Guardian Public Sector Award in December 2017. Jane was invited to share their therapeutic model at the Royal Society of Medicine Innovations conference in March 2018 Jane began her career as a secondary school English teacher, training with the leadership development programme, Teach First. She specialised in working with children with social and emotional difficulties, running a transition group based on Nurture Group principles. Jane also worked for the charity, Jamie's Farm, delivering residential interventions for children at risk of exclusion from school that combined farming, family and therapy. Visits acted as a catalyst for change, supporting vulnerable young people to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Jane spent a year in Nigeria with Voluntary Services Overseas, training primary school teachers and developing community-based projects
Professor Andrea Danese
Professor Danese is Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry (SGDP) Centre and the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London, UK. The research from his team focuses on childhood trauma, and he has published widely on the consequences of childhood trauma, the biological mechanisms through which childhood trauma affects health, the mechanisms of resilience, the reversibility of biological liability linked to trauma, and treatment of trauma-related psychopathology. Dr Danese is also Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist of the National and Specialist CAMHS Clinic for Traumatic, Anxiety, and Depression, at the Maudsley Hospital, London, UK. This is a top-tier clinic for children with complex histories of trauma victimisation and treatment resistance. The clinic has also been advising the UK Department of Health on public health strategies and clinical response to emergencies.
Dr Margot Sunderland
Director of Education and Training at The Centre for Child Mental Health, London. Honorary Visiting Fellow at London Metropolitan University, Associate member of The Royal College of Medicine and Child Psychotherapist with over 30 years’ experience of working with children and teenagers. Author of over 20 books in the field of child mental health. What Every Parent Needs to Know (Dorling Kindersley) won First Prize in the British Medical Association Medical Book awards 2007 (Popular Medicine section). Originator of ‘Helping Where it Hurts’, a therapy programme for troubled children in North London schools.
