How painful it is to live your life with a tormented relationship to self, fuelled by constant inner critical voices and self- loathing. So, this forum will address underlying core pain of trauma-based shame, and how this is a key component of depression and many other mental health problems. Dr Sunderland will discuss how young people can be helped to safely access core memories of shame because “feelings have to be felt to be changed" (Leslie Greenberg).
She will discuss how empathic interventions and collaborative sense-making provided by a therapeutic practitioner, can enable young people to "change emotion with emotion" (Leslie Greenberg) resulting in a shift from self-hate to self-compassion. Dr Sunderland will also focus on the importance of helping young people reflect on unmet emotional needs for connection and validation, and then how to access empowered anger, grief for traumas of omission and from there to establish long-term self-compassion.
She will present fascinating case material about children and young people who felt they were worthless, defective and whose lives were blighted by shame, But, in the safety of therapeutic relationship, they were able to heal.

Mental health symptoms can cause abject misery, adversely impact on functioning, relating, learning, doing, thinking. Symptoms are sometimes so awful that people take their own lives.
So, these mental health presentations provide key knowledge to alleviate suffering. The presentations will bring you fascinating psychology and neuroscience about the causes of mental health problems coupled with evidence-based roads to recovery. This vital knowledge is all too rarely in the public awareness. Instead, many sufferers and helping professionals alike, spend hours focusing on symptom control rather than addressing the core emotional pain that’s causing the symptoms in the first place.
As a result, far too many children and teenagers don’t get the help they need to have quality of life and to ensure that they have their emotions rather than their emotions having them.
