At age 3, I remember leaving my own body at night… as my parents would be beating each other to death downstairs. I grew up thinking I really could fly. I only learned that this was actually dissociation, last year.” (Valerie Sinason, 2020).
In this session, presenters will discuss defences which everyone will adopt in circumstances of extreme emotional pain if they don’t have the internal resources to cope. There will be particular focus given to the defence of dissociation which is a way of distancing yourself from what is happening, a switching off from the here and now. People literally ‘go away’ from the current moment, moving in their mind far away from their mind in torment. But dissociation brings its only agonies. They feel disconnected from their sense of self (depersonalisation) and/or their surroundings (derealisation) a sense of “This is not happening to me.” The presenters will discuss how people can be helped to process what has happened in their lives in the context of a safe therapeutic relationship, so they no longer need to dissociate.
For many years ‘psychoses’ were understood as a purely medical condition, but now evidence shows powerful psychological links between painful life events, psychotic episodes and the experience of hearing voices. In this forum we are thrilled to have Eleanore Longden present. She draws her own lived experience of both trauma psychosis and hearing voices which started when she was at university. Eleanore will talk about her trauma and recovery and her current work in bringing more trauma-focused interventions into mental health services. Eleanore will also discuss the work of the International Hearing Voices Movement, a survivor-led initiative, which aims to support voice-hearers, reduce stigma and promote positive alliances between experts by experience (voice-hearers, their friends and family members) and experts by profession
We are delighted that Jack Nolan will also present. He is also expert by lived experience. As a child, Jack was unable to read and write. He was bullied and became a victim of crime. At age 19, he suffered a psychotic episode and was diagnosed with bipolar After broken down relationships and no hope for the future, he refused to let his mental health issues stop him from creating a positive impact in the world. Jack created 'You Can Become' to help spread awareness of mental health, identify early signs, empower and motivate positive change in young people’s lives.

About the ProgrammeA flexible, rolling programme of online lecture presentations - vital CPD in Child & Adolescent Mental Health, co-run by the Centre for Child Mental Health and the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education (Academic Partner of the University of East London)
Mental health symptoms can cause abject misery, adversely impact on functioning, relating, learning, doing, thinking. Symptoms are sometimes so awful that people take their own lives.
So, these mental health presentations provide key knowledge to alleviate suffering. The presentations will bring you fascinating psychology and neuroscience about the causes of mental health problems coupled with evidence-based roads to recovery. This vital knowledge is all too rarely in the public awareness. Instead, many sufferers and helping professionals alike, spend hours focusing on symptom control rather than addressing the core emotional pain that’s causing the symptoms in the first place.
As a result, far too many children and teenagers don’t get the help they need to have quality of life and to ensure that they have their emotions rather than their emotions having them.
Any child professional and/or parent wanting to help children and teenagers overcome mental health problems.
