'Enabling Children to Speak About Feelings Through the Arts'

emotneedsThese days are designed to enable anyone working with or living with children to help them speak about feelings through the arts and to know how to respond when they do. Children’s primary language for feelings is not one of literal everyday words; however, enter the realm of image and metaphor, and given the right art media, they often speak profoundly and with ease. By and large, these training days will be structured with case material in the morning, demonstrating how children and teenagers have been enabled to speak about their feelings through a particular art form. In the afternoon there will be time for participants to experience for themselves the communicative power of the art form. Participants will take away a host of safe tools and techniques.

Using embodied work and clay she shares ways to encourage creative exploration of our inner world.

During the day we will explore why stories are such a powerful tool for working with children and young people and consider a number of ways to work with them. Underpinned by up-to-date theory the day will bring experiential learning and creativity to the fore. Through encounters with imagination and creativity children can learn to symbolise their feelings into meaning and find voice, expression and description for their inner worlds, which can then be witnessed and heard by an empathic other.
